Our History

     It all began in the year 2000 when Jeff and Marie,two University students studying at a reputable University in  Baguio City ,Philippines had their first stint teaching a handful of Korean students learning English .This marked the beginning of their teaching journey that made them immerse themselves in learning new trends in Education and simultaneously teaching ESL to as many students as possible.

2005

Influenced by the ideals of the founder of their Alma Mater and armed with a dream of establishing a learning institution someday, Jeff and Marie pursued higher studies in Education to lay a foundation for a solid academic career.To gain a competitive advantage, Jeff obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Master in Public Administration . He is currently pursuing further Legal studies, a PhD degree in Educational Management , and is working on a graduate research work in Distance Education at the University of the Philippines Open University. Marie on the other hand,obtained a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Bachelor of Laws, and Master in Business Administration .

2010

In 2010, Jeff started a fruitful career in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. He worked for an American multinational company engaged in communications technology, entertainment and customer service.This milestone highlighted his discovery of how it is like transacting in a networked environment.

2014

2017

  The duo had the opporunity to be invited to work for a language tutorial school catering to Japanese, Chinese, Korean,and other nationalities.

In the fulfillment of a University capstone research project that required to focus on a current Educational problem and a possible solution to it , the duo's extensive knowledge about the issues and needs of Korean language learners led them to look into a solution that would solve the high cost and ineffectiveness of ESL learning in a traditional classroom setting.

     Alongside a team of like-minded professionals in the field of Education and technology,the team worked on combining a host of online open source platforms that would bridge English teachers and learners Online, thus Speak English was born.

​

    It was also in this year that ,Max and Jen,two Korean English enthusiasts,welcomed the idea of bringing Speak English to Korea because they always believed that home is where their heart is.

       There are many paths to start a venture as they say . Many people  have experienced unusual ways on how they got their first start at something ,be it in a profession, career, or business endeavor. But no matter how surreal it may seem, something or someone with a potential has to start somewhere -Even if it means starting small . For Max and Jen , meeting Marie along with her team  working behind the scenes, was the result of a series of  unexpected turn of fortunate events . 
 

    At first, Jen was skeptical of setting up an Online English tutorial due to personnel and resource constraints, as well as  the seemingly impossible feat to make teams  work together despite separated by physical distance ,an office in Korea on one end and an office in the Philippines on the other.  Max on the other hand had a glimmer of hope.

      To some, this scenario can easily discourage someone not to move forward or even dare to make that first step and find an answer to the question : What will happen if we have not tried at all? The best part is the thought that something good may happen if only they have tried. The fervent passion and determination , backed by divine intervention led the duo Marie and Jeff ,to motivate Jen through the power of words inspired by love and utmost sincerity, to have the courage to try even if it means starting small and that it is never too late to enter the gates of opportunity to become what you might have been.From then on , Max and Jen became a part of the Speak English family.

    Max and Jen both studied in one of Korea's reputable universities based in Seoul. Max studied Engineering with a focus on Ceramic technology . He worked as a researcher in Korea's National Research Institute. At present , he is immersed in the corporate world in of one of Korea's largest technology based conglomerates. 

​

      Jen on the other hand studied Architecture but eventually found herself in a very exciting and colorful Marketing career for a Taiwan based Information technology company. Opportunity eventually presented itself so she moved to Europe to pursue her interest in learning  the English language and various cultures.Armed with a new skill set ,she went back to Korea and continued working as a Marketing Executive of a Global medical device and pharmaceutical company with established presence in America ,Germany and Denmark. Today , Jen runs her own marketing firm in Korea.

     Jeff and Marie ,Max and Jen are only a few of the people who make part of the Speak English family. 

 
     Speak English is a new start-up , though seemingly small ,they believe that they are a Big family with a Big heart for learning and teaching , not just the English language but also teaching and discussing anything under the sun. Rest assured that their wealth of experience and life lessons will make your journey at Speak English a unique but familiar learning experience .
